Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC)
General course information
The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations.
The SRC course is recommended for surf life saving (SLS) members who wish to perform the role of SLS water safety personnel (the SRC is the minimum water safety qualification for junior activity supervision) and/or take on a lifesaving cadetship and join a life saving patrol.
This course is usually run in conjunction with the Bronze Medallion course. Specific schedules will be issued to enrolled candidates for each course by the lead trainer.
Specific entry requirements
Candidates must meet all of the following conditions:
be at least 13 years of age on the date of final assessment
prior to starting the course, must have the ability to swim 200 metres in five (5) minutes or less, unaided (goggles/mask permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres
attendance at all sessions is mandatory to complete this course

How you will learn
The Surf Rescue Certificate is designed to be delivered using a blended learning approach. This means you will learn using a variety of methods including face-to-face learning (in the classroom, on the beach and in the water) and self-paced learning (online or paper-based and completed in your own time).

The PSAR35 is the key educational resource used to deliver the Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion courses.
The PSAR is now free for members to access via the Members Area > eLearning > Document Library.
What you will learn
The SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate provides participants with skills and knowledge related to:
surf awareness
aquatic rescue operations

Certification
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded with the SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate. You will also receive the following nationally recognised units of competency, some of which may be recognised as prior learning for the PUA20119 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue):
PUASAR012 Apply surf awareness and self-rescue skills
PUAOPE013 Operate communications systems and equipment
PUASAR013 Participate in an aquatic rescue operation
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Assessment
Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Annual skills maintenance/proficiency requirements
For your SRC award to remain current, members must perform an annual skills maintenance activity each year. This involves both theory and practical sessions. Please note that if you gain your award after 1st July then you are not required to attend skills maintenance until the following year.
