The fourth annual open ocean Solstice Swim exceeded all expectations on Sunday 21st July. The Solstice Swim is a joint project of Rotary Alexandra Headlands and Alex SLSC to raise funds for local charities. John Malloy (Alex Rotary) and our own Tiarrn Raymond (Alex SLSC) led a large team of volunteers to ensure the success of the community event. The swim was initially postponed due to unusually large surf conditions and subsequent beach closure. Fortunately our entrants stayed with us and the rescheduled date delivered perfect conditions for swimmers.
This year the new a short course 500m swim for kids was introduced to complement the 1km, 3km and 5km course. ‘Celebrity’ swimmer, Sam Penny, joined the swimmers, just prior to tackling the Ice Mile Swim and double English Channel crossing.
Congratulations to all our swimmers on the day for their exceptional grit. Special mention to our clubbies Blair Day and Mellissa Gaudaut for cracking times in their respective age groups. Councillor John Connolly presented medals and prizes to place getters at the bluff bar ‘recovery’ session.
This year the Sunshine Coast White Ribbon Committee received the proceeds from the swim. The committee raises awareness and shares practical information about preventing violence in our community.
The support from our local rotary, lifesaving and business community was unprecedented. A huge thank-you to the following contributors;
IGA Marketplace Wises Rd for sponsorship, providing fruit and water for the swimmers,
The team at Quinn and Scanttini Lawyers for providing goodie bags,
Anytime Fitness ran the warm up session,
Sunshine Coast Council and John Connelly,
Shane Baird and the entire water safety crew,
Mark Thornton and entire crash crew for setup, and
Linda Thornton & Sam Rawlings for first aid tent.
