Everyone else’s off season becomes the IRB teams on season. Beginning at the end of April, we have five rounds of the Ocean Roar series, Queensland State Titles and finishing our season in July at the Australian IRB Championships. Once again our team was planning to have another epic season. With both returning crews and brand new ones, we were set for an exciting year of learning, training and racing in various surf conditions.
We had some great results throughout the Ocean Roar Series, most notably a 3rd Place overall at the final round which was held on our home beach. This put us in a good position to finish the series of in 5th place overall. Unfortunately our State Titles was post poned due to large swell and will be run in August (after our Aussie Titles have been completed). However, from our results throughout the season, we were incredibly proud to have seven team members selected in the QLD Cyclones IRB Team.
Emma Partington, Molly Megson and Amy Miller were one of our rookie crews and proved themselves to be incredibly skilled which landed them a position in the QLD Development Squad. Sammy Thornton, Sonita Leng-Cole, Tim Minett and Alicia Baird were also incredibly proud to be named in the Queensland Cyclones Team, coming away with an 11 in a row win for QLD at the Interstate Championships.
Our Masters team of Trent Cannon and Gareth Evans out did themselves throughout the season and carried this form into the Australian Championships coming away with a GOLD in the Masters Tube Rescue with Sammy Thornton. The boys also placed 4th place in the Masters Mass Rescue and Teams Rescue which is an amazing achievement. Our Open Female Tube Rescue team of Sammy Thornton, Sonita Leng-Cole and Lauren Cannon came away with a Silver medal.
Overall, we have had another very successful year and would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped us out. A big mention goes to our Team Manager and coach, Lauren Cannon, coach Sammy Thornton, assistant team manager Di Berry and finally our patient managers, Bronwyn Champness and Lorraine Buhk. Furthermore, huge thank you too our wonderful officials, mechanics, team members, crash crew and supporters.
Good luck to those competing at State Titles next month!
