Vale - Steve Wilkes: 1923-2018

Steve Wilkes, Life Member and Life Governor of the Alexandra Headland SLSC has passed away at the age of 95.

Steve was a magnificent athlete for Alex, his only Club, during the late 1940s and 1950s. He was selected for a number of Australian Surf Lifesaving Teams and was known internationally as the "Ironman of Surf". He won six QLD State Belt Titles in a row and seven QLD State Surf Race Titles in seven years, as well as numerous national medals.

He was inducted in the Surf Life Saving Australia Hall of Fame in its inaugural year.

Steve was a builder and constructed gratis the Club's 1948 Clubhouse, which still can be seen at the west of the Training Room. From 1942-1946, during the Second World War, Steve served in the Australian Army in New Guinea and Bougainville Island.

There has been a private family funeral service for Steve and the Club plans to have an afternoon honoring the contributions of the whole Wilkes family in early February 2019.
