Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART)

General course information

ART courses are usually delivered on a Saturday or Sunday (full day) or over two week night evenings (6pm - 9pm).

SLSA award: Advanced Resuscitation Techniques

Note: for members who hold the older SLSA award Advanced Resuscitation Techniques [AID] (unit of competency HLTAID007), this remains a current award for surf lifesaving in Queensland and does not require upgrading at this time. Members can continue to do skills maintenance and patrol with HLTAID007.

Specific entry requirements

  • Participants must hold  unit of competency HLTAID011 Provide First Aid to enrol into this course

  • Be at least 15 years of age on date of final assessment

  • Be a financial member of Alexandra Headland SLSC

  • Be an actively patrolling member

Course overview

The aim of this course is to develop skills and knowledge to manage life-threatening external bleeding, use oxygen, airway management devices and automated external defibrillators during resuscitation, and to administer oxygen to conscious or unconscious victims.

Learning outcomes

  • Respond to an emergency situation

  • Manage life-threatening external bleeding

  • Perform primary (DRABCD) and secondary (vital signs) assessment of a victim

  • Perform advanced resuscitation, including use of oxygen equipment, oropharyngeal airways and suction

  • Identify victims suffering from condition(s) where providing oxygen would be beneficial

  • Communicate details of an incident

  • Complete documentation

  • Evaluate an incident and your own performance

  • Identify possible psychological impacts of first aid incidents and how to seek help

  • Restore equipment ready for use


Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in a simulated workplace setting. Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.

Annual skills maintenance/proficiency requirements

For this award to remain current, candidates must perform an annual proficiency check.
