First Aid
General course information
Upon successful completion of this course you will be awarded with the SLSA First Aid and the SLSA Resuscitation awards.You will also receive the following nationally recognised qualification and units of competency issued through Surf Life Saving Queensland (RTO 2804):
HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
Specific entry requirements
Be at least 14 years of age on date of final assessment
If renewing first aid less than 6 months expiry on current first aid
Registered and financial member of Alexandra Headland SLSC for current season
Be an active patrolling member OR be enrolled in course to patrol (Observers/SRC/Bronze)
If 18+ years hold a blue card, CSA and CYRMS
Course overview
Provide First Aid aims to develop the knowledge and skills for a person to manage emergency first aid situations and deliver competent emergency care until the arrival of professional medical support. This course includes CPR.
Learning outcomes
Respond in an emergency situation
Recognise an emergency situation
Identify, assess and manage immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others
Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response
Assess the situation and seek assistance from emergency response services where required
Apply appropriate first aid procedures
Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
Display respectful behaviour towards casualty
Obtain consent from casualty where possible
Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles
Communicate details of the incident
Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services
Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate
Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies
Evaluate own performance
Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers involved in critical incidents
Participate in debriefing to address individual needs
Assessment
Assessment is through demonstration, presentation and application of all elements of competency in the workplace.
Participants will be required to complete activities that may include role-plays, oral and written questioning, practical demonstrations and performing scenarios.
Annual skills maintenance/proficiency requirements
This award is current for three (3) years and must be renewed through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
For Resuscitation to remain current for SLS patrol purposes, candidates must perform an annual skills maintenance activity at a Queensland Club between 1 July and 31 December of each year.
Please note that if you gain your award after 1 July then you are not required to attend a proficiency until the following year.
